Libraries are allowed to lend printed books because of the first-sale doctrine. But digital and digitized material does not fall under the doctrine so now frequently, ownership is kept by publishers and use is governed by restrictive licenses. In this talk, we are going to explore what possibilities libraries might explore in this new landscape and will consider that the future of libraries might be dependent on the ability to copy work.

With over 3 years of managing a Makerspace at the Westport Library there are many stories to share about planning, implementing and growing a participatory learning environment. MakerSpaces are serving as engaging learning environments in all types of libraries. They are symbols of the evolving library and this presentation will focus on concepts and strategies that can be used to help create or expand YOUR community’s interpretation of a Makerspace.
