How Can our Physical Spaces Reflect our Shared Values?
The built environment is our societal values written in concrete. But we rarely start our conversations about designing new libraries with our values in mind. For that matter, we rarely have conversation about our values at all! This session will adapt a process used for K-12 school design to explore the relationship between a library’s physical spaces, organizational values, and desire for positive social and environmental impact.
Speaker: Andrew Ellsworth serves as VP of Health and Learning for the Green Building Alliance. He co-leads the Green & Healthy Schools Academy program within GBA, including work on healthy school environments, culture of sustainability, and capital projects. Prior to joining the Green Building Alliance, Andrew worked for many years in sustainability and green building consulting.
Motivating Board Members: Increasing Involvement Through Effective “Agenda” Management
This highly interactive session shares best practices in board engagement and how to structure your board’s “Agenda of Work” to help you recruit new board and committee members and accomplish more through strategic input and participation. Topics include: board/staff roles and responsibilities, creating a “strategic agenda of work” that includes specific, time-limited assignments, structuring meetings to increase participation, and the role of “fun” in your board dynamics.
Speaker: Debra Thompson is President of Strategy Solutions, a consulting firm dedicated to facilitating creative solutions to ensure the sustainability of public, private, and nonprofit organizations and creating healthy communities. Debra is an adjunct faculty member at Duquesne University where she teaches Organizational Development, Program Development/Evaluation, Leading Organizational Change and Community Leadership in the Master of Organizational Leadership program. She is a certified trainer, consultant and peer reviewer for both the PA and National Standards for Excellence in Nonprofit Ethics and Accountability.®
Trends, Tipping Points, and Fads – What’s on the Technology Horizon for Libraries?
We are living in a rapidly changing world with always-on connectivity. Many of these changes are taking place because of emerging technology trends. This presentation provides a brief explanation of current and emerging technology trends and how those trends affect libraries and library customers. Based on these trends, practical next steps for libraries are provided.
Speaker: David Lee King is the Digital Services Director at Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, where he plans, implements, and experiments with emerging technology trends. He speaks internationally about emerging trends, social media, websites and libraries, and has been published in many library-related journals. David is a Library Journal Mover and Shaker. His newest book is Face2Face: Using Facebook, Twitter, and Other Social Media Tools to Create Great Customer Connections. David blogs here.
